Catechism of the Catholic Church (675)

Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh. ~ Catechism of the Catholic Church (675)

A Case in Point: Sarah Silverman

I have received a couple of comments referring to my 'controversial' post on Jewish attacks on the holy names of Jesus and Mary. Sarah Silverman perfectly fulfils through her comedy show the Talmudic views on Our Lord Jesus Christ as a 'sorcerer' or 'magician' through her comedy show, 'Jesus is Magic'.

Before discussing Christ's crucifixion in which she triumphantly exclaims, "I hope the Jews did kill Christ! I'd do it again!", Sarah, claims that she is one of the 'Chosen People' but her Catholic husband believes 'Jesus is magic'. Insodoing, Sarah displays the clear Talmudic teaching par excellence. Yet this lady is presumably one of those celebrities who is a 'non-practising' or 'atheist' Jew? How is it that Sarah is allowed to air her insulting 'views' on stage and television? In the name of what? Freedom of speech?

Why is this complete and utter disrespect of the Catholic religion allowed by US television networks and other media? Why do we rarely hear Catholic leaders denouncing it? Why do none of her religious elders bring her to task and ask her to show respect for other religions, including the Catholic religion? If a Catholic said similar of Jews, a Bishop might see fit to intervene. Why do the names of Jesus and Mary enjoy no protection but other religious figures do? Catholics are called to show charity, courtesy and generosity to people of other religious faiths, yet I cannot help but feel that the level of 'brotherhood' exemplified by Pope Francis is grounded in either incredibly ignorant, or incredibly naive.

I only ask the questions. What is with the secular Jewish obsession with insulting Christ and Mary? How should Catholics respond to secular Jewish hatred of Christ and Mary? Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do? Yes, indeed, but I cannot see for a moment how Jews and Catholics are 'on the same page'. For us, Jesus Christ is Lord and God. For a percentage of Jews at least, Jesus Christ is a figure of fun, ridicule, derision and mockery. Say a prayer for this lady, who in childhood has clearly been taught blasphemies concerning Our Lord and God, since it is clear that she didn't just 'come up' with this stuff. It is the 'holy book' of Judaism that says Christ our God was a 'magician'. All she has done is incorporate this teaching into her comedy routine.

I've always wondered about "secular" Jews. Are they simply an ethnicity? How can you be Jewish and secular if part of your identity as a Jew is based upon certain religious beliefs? Anyway, they don't attack Islam because Islam will physically attack them. They seem obsessed with Christianity probably because they fear it is true, and therefore need to constantly reinforce their rejection of it by mocking. And the worst they will get (from a temporal perspective) is a strongly worded blog post.

Though neither of you are following the best advice in the Talmud:If silence be good for the wise, how much better for fools.

You are not an expert in the Talmud, neither is La Silverman, neither am I.

So you think we are being persecuted by "secular Jews"? I'm still not convinced your response is Christian...

You're right. Christians are not the experts on the Talmud. Jewish people are.

I didn't say we are being persecuted by secular Jews. I asked why prominent secular Jews cannot show some respect - that we are asked to give to their religion - to Jesus Christ and the BVM.

I think it forever is going to be this way. Jesus commented that we would be persecuted because he was persecuted first.

But you're right. We surely are due some respect.

The problem is that even a Jew looking over the blogs most of us here regularly visit, will see people lamenting the fact that 70% don't believe in the Real Presence, people touching the Host (EHMCs) and the issue of CiTH and not kneeling. They will see that we Catholics don't even respect Christ - so we are a source of derision.

When Pope Pius XII was carried on the sedia gestatoria surrounded by flabella wearing a tiara, he was the new Julius Caesar as was St Peter crowned Caesar in Syria by Christ. The use of the flabella embodies, for me at least, Christianity defeating ancient false gods, in this case Egyptian ones, a continuity of Moses defeat of Pharaoh and his armies. Up to VII, we were the continuation of Imperial Rome, we colonised and Christianised the known world.

You're right, C Matt.

This is why we must continue to pray for the conversion of Jews - 'perfidious'; which simply means, 'without the Faith'. Jesus Christ is God, He is everyone's salvation. Catholics who participate in patting Jews or muslims or pagans on the back for denying Christ, have crossed over to 'perfidious'.

p.s. silverman possibly does believe the creepy things she says, but to her, i would imagine, Jesus Christ is simply a way of getting laughs - sound satanic? 'cause it is.
