Rio

There are some simply astonishing pictures of the 3 million attended WYD in Rio on The Telegraph.

There are other astonishing things that have happened at Rio, but let's not dwell on that.

Thanks for the link to the Telegraph photos. Very impressive but had to smile at some of the captions.

One said 'The Mass included Bible readings' - I wonder what they expected?

Another mentioned 'portable bathrooms' and I thought the Daily Telegraph was British. This American euphemism conjured up a strange image for us British.

And 'rosary-toting' - well really.

The Mass did get a mention on the ITV news tonight and having the subtitles on (which can be very funny when watching the news) I read that the Pope said 'what has God been trying to SELL us?'

I understand that the Church is losing out to the Pentecostals in Brazil but is it really sensible for the Church to copy their form of Gospel singing, arm waving and swaying when singing during Mass?
It looked like 'if you can't beat 'em join 'em.'

And the row of Bishops a few days back all wearing polka dot mitres looked like a measles infection! I sound like a right grumpy granny but I do hope the young people carry back good memories of WYD and heed Pope Francis words.

In a word, no, but the Church in Brazil has obviously chosen its path, though not all have.
