Whatever you think about Medjugorje, the organisers and multi-million pound marketing firm hired for the Papal Visit could learn a few tricks from the 'visionaries'. Given that it is unlikely that the organisers will think of this, get your Pope Benedict T-Shirts and other merchandise here.

Interested to see that you have included Papal Visit postcards in your list of ideas.

For the last visit there were a number of publishers who produced commemorative cards one of whom published a set of 62 showing photographs of all the main events which took place. Pope John-Paul was a most travelled Pope and publishers in even the most obscure countries visited by him produced postcards to commemorate his visits.

As I write a postcard column in a philatelic magazine I had been asked by several collectors about cards for the forthcoming visit. Consequently earlier this year I contacted all the British postcard publishers who had produced cards in 1982 and who were still in business asking them if they had any plans for this year's visit. The firms all replied in the same vein 'We have no plans to publish a commemorative card.' The only one with a slightly different reply told me that he had no plans this time round 'unless the Pope is arrested!.'

Incidentally the strangest Souvenir I have seen on sale in Lourdes (and you can buy there just about everything with 'Lourdes' written on it!) was a back-scratcher. Now you haven't got that on your list!

How about Bash-a-Bishop novelties and souvenirs?

There is still half a warehouse full of unsold souvenirs leftover from the 1982 papal visit.

Souvenirs didn't bring in a lot of money the last time. As the bishops got their fingers burnt before, they're hardly going to repeat the same mistake again!
