St John the Baptist and Marriage

There is a very good and thought provoking homily which was recorded on St John the Baptist and Marriage on New Liturgical Movement.

It is very interesting that St John the Baptist does not die explicitly for being a Christian, nor for proclaiming Christ's Divinity, but for upholding and defending Marriage.

Yes, it IS very interesting what he died for. Didn't our Lord JesusChrist say of His cousin, "Greater man of woman has not been woman"??,or more accurately from Douay-Rheims Bible: "Amen, I say to you, there hath not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he." (st. Matthew 11:11). This "intrigues" me that He should have said that about St. John the Baptist instead of, (for instance) about St. Joseph, His own virginal foster-father.

Henry VIII's early martyrs could also be said to have died for the Sacrament of Marriage. I'm sure that Henry would have settled happily for a 'period of reflection and an expression of repentance' after his 'marriage' to Anne Boleyn and then re-admittance to the Sacraments.

Never thought of him as being a martyr for marriage before.
