Fire at Brighton YMCA in Old Steine

Breaking news...

More than 60 people have been left homeless following a fire at the YMCA building in the centre of Brighton.

About 30 firefighters tackled the blaze at the facility in Old Steine on Tuesday evening. No-one was injured in the fire and residents were given temporary accommodation overnight. Police have arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, and bailed him pending further inquiries.

Inquiries into the cause of the fire, which left the building badly damaged, are still continuing. Officers said they expected their investigation would continue for weeks rather than days.
