Slightly Eerie...

‘May God forgive you for what you have done in my regard’ ~ John Paul I

“May God forgive you for what you’ve done!” ~ Pope Francis I

May God preserve and keep our beloved Holy Father Francis and give him long life!

Yes there are to me several "eerie" things that the new Pope shares with The Late John Paul I AKA Albino Luciani. He broke precedence with the name he took. He talked longer than any other newly elected pope he shares with a great love for the poor and being simple but as I also learned today, he also has a limited breathing ability also like JPI. He even wears glasses like him. I am glad its not just myself.

There do seem to be quite a lot of similarities between Pope Francis and JP1 - one of my first thoughts when he appeared on the balcony was how similar the mannerisms were (even if the smile was a little more restrained). His personal humility, concern for the poor and gentleness all seem to mark out a man capable of taking up the pastoral aspects of the Luciani papacy which never had the chance to reach fruition. I recall that one of the intentions of JP1 was to clease the church of evil and corruption (remember, he was elected shortly after the scandals involving P2, the mafia and the Vatican bank) and restore her standing in the world.

Ad multos annos!

Our new Pope's smile may have seemed restrained on the balcony (and who would not be in front of the world's media?) but having just watched his welcoming of the Cardinals today, Pope Francis really is another 'smiling Pope.' There was a lot of laughter from him and hand gesturing - he seemed completely at ease greeting each one of the Cardinals.

Cardinal Cormac, who he spoke with one of the longest, towered above him and indeed Pope Francis appeared smaller than most of them.

We were all sad when John-Paul 1st left us so soon before we had even got to know him. It is wonderful to have a look alike 'replacement' and after initial worries (largely caused by vitriolic comments on the web) I look forward to the pontificate of Francis and pledge him my complete obedience.

It is rather eerie, Lawrence. I really hope that things won't play out that same way. It would be such a loss. Pope Francis, by all accounts, is a fantastic man.
