Two words, Your Holiness. Diego. Maradona. The Fall affects all of us. You can have the most fulfilling career in the world and still fall into vice. I don't mention Diego to offend Argentinians, but to illustrate that Original Sin does not observe fixed rules concerning status, or profession. One would have thought someone who has heard lots of Confessions would have realised that at some point.

Meanwhile, back in the real world...
"The path of education, the path of sports, and the path of employment, in other words, that there be jobs available at an early age. If we have these three paths, I assure you there will not be any addictions, no drugs, no alcohol. Why? Because school carries you forward, sport carries you forward, and work carries you forward.”

Education, sports and employment are not enough. We don't need an ordained minister, nay, St Peter's successor himself, talking such materialist platitudes. The people are starving for the spiritual nourishment and salvation which it is the Church's sacred mission to offer.
Oh dear, dreamland even gets to the Holy Father, Kyrie eleison
Is this man Catholic? I mean honest to God I have to ask the question seriously at this point.
After the continually solid nourishment that we received from Pope Benedict, I can barely believe what the current Pope says sometimes.
Man does not live on bread alone.

SAY WHAT???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My husband is a Ph.D., Clinical Psychologitst and all...ALL of his severely depressed and horribly drug addicted, sex addicted, cutting themselves addicted and the girls with severe bulimia and anorexia are all from families where they have received the HIGHEST and BEST educations, well rounded in sports and have the best employment situations in the "freakin'" world...hmmmmmmmmmmmm, Holy Father, "could it be Satan?!"
Somebody shoot me!!
Some years ago we had a very small charity helping street children in Buenos Aires. I remember the priest who took these children telling us how increasingly many of the children were running away from middle-class families.
Well, it is at least partly true. Employment prospects are not analogous to actual employment. At university, I know many people who are in the habit of taking drugs - they're middle class, well educated, often play a sport or go to the gym, and have no employment other than their degrees - because they're given money to study, which at 6 hours of contact time per week, leave plenty of time for mischief.
Those people who wish to break those habits, take up a sport and throw themselves into it, or get a part time job.
This is hardly so different from the old adage "the devil makes work for idle hands". Anything that keeps you busy is a way of moving beyond addictions.
Thanks for the addenda, Bones. That is fair play, and charity.
