'Moving Beyond Jesus'

I apologise if I have scandalised any readers by forgetting to bow my head at every mention of the name of our Blessed Saviour.

'Moving Beyond Jesus'

Take an association of nuns
Tell them habits inhibit woman
‘Lose the wimples girls
Show a little more leg’
Introduce them to feminism

Make them think the Holy Church has moved on
From all that stuff about Salvation
'Lose the Rosaries girls'
Replace them with Myers Briggs
Get them teaching yoga lessons

Now you’ve got them teaching all the children in the schools everything but the Catechism
And of vice and virtue the children hear nothing
For the nuns have found a new vocation
Teaching children the Mass is just a friendly meal with Jesus
Just bread and wine
Symbolism
There’s no need to kneel
So just do what you feel in the Church and in the bedroom

‘We are moving beyond Jesus’
‘We are moving beyond Jesus’
‘We are moving beyond Jesus’
Into the darkness, far from the Light

Now you’ve destroyed their spiritual life
Appeal to their intellectual pride
Introduce them to Marx
Introduce them to Lennon
Hell, why not introduce them to Freud?

Take an association of nuns
You’ll have them falling into schism
Depict the Church as old-fashioned, outmoded patriarchal
Oppressor of the Catholic woman

Make rebellion as attractive to the Orders as tulips in the springtime sun
"She’d never thought of the Priesthood
Didn’t think it could happen
But now she wants to be one"
Now they’re marching for choice and publicly supporting the ‘right’ to an abortion
You got nuns condoning murder, artificial contraception
Looks like you’ve succeeded in your mission

You got them ‘moving beyond Jesus’
They are ‘moving beyond Jesus’
Yes they’re ‘moving beyond Jesus’
Moving so far out of sight

‘We are moving beyond Jesus’
‘We are moving beyond Jesus’
‘We are moving beyond Jesus’
Foolish virgins looking for a light

Bishops ‘moving beyond Jesus’
Clergy ‘moving beyond Jesus’
Religious ‘moving beyond Jesus’
Into the arms of the Antichrist

‘We are moving beyond Jesus’
‘We are moving beyond Jesus’
‘We are moving beyond Jesus’
The nuns who left Jesus behind
Only to find Him at the End of Time
The nuns who left Jesus behind
Only to find Him at the End of Time

Brilliant. Evokes the madness and the sadness ...

Another dreary drone where the words and the music are going in different directions. I agree with the Vatican stance on the Magisterium of Nuns but I wonder if you've ever met an educated sister who has lived with both the pre- and post- conciliar way of doing things. They can be very scary and very impressive at the same time. And they don't need to be patronised by dreary, a-musical droning. Having said this, the latest song is a little more cheery than usual.

Gosh. You're a cheery soul, aren't you?

Unfortunately my speakers are broken so I didn't get to listen but these words stood out starkly....

'The nuns who left Jesus behind
Only to find Him at the End of Time'

That was brilliant! I especially liked the cynical undertones you evoke here. One of my criticisms of evangelical music - often of the protestant sort, it has to be said - it that it lacks any wit or subtlety. Not so here.

Thank you.
