If you've ever seen Dr Scott Hahn at work - the brilliant Catholic biblical theologian, member of Opus Dei and former Presbyterean minister - you'll know that this is how most Bibles he uses look. He makes brilliant defences of Catholic orthodoxy using holy scripture. His bibles look like this but he has the very highest regard for scripture.
Most university students will underline, highlight or annotate their textbooks. It is a method of learning.
Jesus said, "He who hears my words and puts them into practice is like the man who built his house upon the rock." If underlining verses helps people to put them into practice, where's the harm?
If we venerate the physical book at the expense of the truth within that book, surely we've got things the wrong way round...?
I get your point Laurence and I think it's humorous. In good humor it is. And all this scripture reading,studying among lay Catholics is a rather new trend. Now I have a humorous thought about that,but I'll refrain.
