UK's homosexual population size revealed: Just 1.5% of Britons say they are gay, lesbian or bisexual.I had thought it was 1 in 10...Oh well, perhaps that was just propaganda after all. 1.5 % of the UK...According to the Mail, that's about 1 in 100 people identify as L, G, or B .
According to the Census of 2001, out of a total population of about 60 million, about 1 in 12 people in the United Kingdom is Catholic. So why is this not reflected in Government policy, Government think-tanks or in just who the Government listens to? Perhaps it is a case of whoever shouts the loudest is heard...
How can it be that just 1.5 % of the population are running the BBC and other mainstream media outlets? Credit where its due! You can say what you like, but that's an incredible work rate and tireless effort on behalf of the cause! If only we Catholics were so devoted!

It's really very, very clever. If only Catholics were so organised and media friendly. We need to get the Holy Father here every year to convince society that we're everywhere! Oh...we are, just we're so passive!
We need to be a relatively small but vociferous minority in society, but still be larger than the gay population...which, er, we are.
Had you not noticed how many gays were in the last few Cabinets? All appointed by that allegedly heter0sexual Tony Bliar. But then he was also alleged to be a Catholic too.

ReplyDeleteThere is a difference betwen those that self-identify as gay/lesbian and those with a same-sex attraction (who would not necessarilly self-idetify as gay). For exaple, many black men who have sex with other men (MSMs) would not consider themselves to be gay. The latter also includes bisexuals etc. Also it's eneraly accepted that all surveys under-estimate the number of people with a gay/lesbian sexuality due to under-reporting etc; plus you don't cite the size and method of this survey and what the margin of error is. It's all in the scientific literature if you bothered to read up on it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I don't see whatever the percentage of the population is with same sex attraction has to do with anything. Human and civil rights are not based on how many sub-groups of people there are, they are innate.
What you don't report from the survey is that 4% said 'other [sexuality]' and 3% declined to answer. add these (or most of these) to the 1.5% figure and you are indeed very close to the 6% - 7% qouted by stonewall and other social scienific researchers.
ReplyDeleteAn even more fascinating statistic would be the figures for divorces resulting from civil partnerships since 2005, expressed as a percentage of the total number of civil partnerships entered into during the same period.And compared to a)civil and b)church marriages within the same period. I'm not being rude - I would just be interested to know.

Being black has nothing directly to do with the subject but I qouted the example of young gay black men who have sex with other men who would not consider themselves to be gay - there is an extensive literature about this. It's why social researchers usually refer to the term 'men who have sex with men' (MSM) to be more accurate than presuming a sexual identity to other's sexual behaviour.
ReplyDeleteSimilarly, men who have sex with other men who are the insertive sexual partner would not necessarilly consider themselves as gay - in many cultures.
People who have entered into a civil partnership cannot get 'divorced'; they can only de-register their civil union.
ReplyDeleteI believe the proportion was quite large following the initial surge of civil partnership registrations but it has decreased significantly since.
Well, who are you to label their sexuality?

EF pastor emeritus - actually there are quite a few gays in the current con/lib cabinet, arond the same number as the last government.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately many of them are married with children, and coming out so late in their lives has caused a lot of hurt and disruption to their families and relationship. Obviously they felt they had to get married to appease their conservative voters and put up the pretence of conservative family values.
exactly my point Lawrence, it's not me labelling their sexual behaviour into an identity but some studies do... it explains the discrepency between this survey's 1.5% prevelance figure and other studies (who use less discriminating criteria) around the 6 - 7% mark.
