Right, Frankie -- so if you haven't found the right guy, just go out and get preggers so you are more of a woman. I guess St. Therese of Lisieux didn't cut it with him. We are all called to different things.

I don't know who Frankie is, but I think the Holy Father, in the context of talking to women religious, is talking about spiritual maternity. Like the spiritual paternity of the priesthood, it means a life of dedication which is fruitful, other centred, generous rather than barren and self-centred.

Your translation as "ordained woman" is wrong. The Pope said, in the Italian original, "la consecrata." Big diff. Here's the text from the Vatican website:

La consacrata è madre, deve essere madre e non “zitella”! Scusatemi se parlo così, ma è importante questa maternità della vita consacrata, questa fecondità! Questa gioia della fecondità spirituale animi la vostra esistenza; siate madri, come figura di Maria Madre e della Chiesa Madre. Non si può capire Maria senza la sua maternità, non si può capire la Chiesa senza la sua maternità e voi siete icona di Maria e della Chiesa.
