There was a good comment on the Argus website recently following the report that Brighton is the most Godless city in Britain. (Although it has been pointed out that another city has also been given this accolade)
'For a city where 42% don't have a religion there's a hell of a lot of people buying mindless junk to give each other to celebrate something they don't believe exists.'
Why are Catholics so dismissive of those who are not Catholic? People who do not believe in God can still celebrate friendship, family life and giving at Christmas. If Catholics want to be of use to God's world they would recognise such signs of his love at work and reach out to people, rather than holding themselves apart and smugly superior. God is just as much present, perhaps more so, in snowbound cities as he is in the Church's introverted and unreal preoccupation with its own myths and rituals.
