We have had the same definition of marriage for over 2000 years. Marriage is and had been clearly definded as the union between a man and a woman as in husband and wife. (Webster) If to men or two women want to live together, that is fine, but give it its own name. It is not marriage.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389530333077823143.post-67691166802494299482012-02-20T17:29:16.576+00:002012-02-20T17:29:16.576+00:00Thanks for reading.
1) You're right, I should...Thanks for reading.

1) You're right, I should, technically, have referred to them as "the two partners", or something, but that would rather make my point about the technical language of the whole setup.

2) This is a bit weird, comparing gay marriage to theft. If I steal your stereo, you no longer have a stereo. If I marry a man, will you no longer have a wife? No, of course not. Who loses out in the "marriage theft"? The word "marriage" gains an extra meaning, but it doesn't mean that existing and future straight marriages aren't as valid as they've always been.

2[b]) [You've got 2) twice, by the way.]

I admit that it's self-centred of me, and I hope my friends don't mind. But anyway. Your description of marriage - man and woman, ordered for the begetting of children, etc - is very much a Christian definition. It's not for everyone; the only arbiter of what a word means is what people think it means, and many if not most people nowadays think it's about a declaration of love. I am entirely OK with churches refusing to marry gay people; but gay people having civil weddings is really nothing to do with the Church.

3) If marriage is about procreation, then how can an infertile couple have a proper marriage? Either it is or it isn't.

I could go on, though I doubt I have convinced you any more than you have me. But here's my point, I suppose. If we make the fairly minimal change of "civil partnerships" to "civil weddings", it will not force you to recognise them as real or valid. They will make no difference to your life whatsoever. They will not lead to "society's own destruction". Norway, for instance, has totally failed to implode since gay marriage was introduced.

I know you're arguing for what seems to you the right reasons, but honestly, it will make literally no difference to your life if gay marriage is allowed; it will just make some gay people happier. And if God really is so against it, then a God who wants to deny people happiness is not one I would want to worship, if I believed He existed.

Anyway. Thanks again for reading, and for the civil response.

TomTom Chivershttp://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/tomchiversscience/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389530333077823143.post-55851355349934396692012-02-17T16:35:16.783+00:002012-02-17T16:35:16.783+00:00Thank you very much for the great service you are ...Thank you very much for the great service you are doing for the Church, and the wider society.Lyndanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389530333077823143.post-46273209749788889422012-02-17T15:06:17.299+00:002012-02-17T15:06:17.299+00:00Wrong, Paul.

No longer will teachers be able to solicit the answer for where they would put on the probability line "even chances" of the next baby being born in the local hospital to be a boy or a girl. Evidently now we will have three tick-boxes for gender. And offensive, homophobic words like "mum" "dad" "husband" "wife" - they're going to be legally banished too!epsilonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17785182500278281351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389530333077823143.post-89996286538868052712012-02-16T23:05:02.813+00:002012-02-16T23:05:02.813+00:00Excellent post by Brendan O'Neill on the parti...Excellent post by Brendan O'Neill on the particular foolishness of comparing same sex 'marriage' with interracial marriage http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/brendanoneill2/100137861/it-is-moronic-to-compare-opposition-to-gay-marriage-with-opposition-to-interracial-marriage/Lazarushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09716412032074416331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389530333077823143.post-54453302510935750742012-02-16T15:27:17.490+00:002012-02-16T15:27:17.490+00:00Hi Laurence - I am passing on a "meme".
