Be Careful Now and Mind How You Go...

And don't be like this guy (pictured left).

His Holiness Pope Francis has a little more elaboration on the spirit and the law today here.

While Ed Peters of 'In the Light of the Law', has his own thoughts on the musings of Cardinal Walter Kasper here and here.

A little bit of respect for the law is not a terrible thing, especially Church law, lest Church ministers become like unto the lawless one referred to by St Paul in his epistle to the Thessalonians.

I feel it is important that Almighty God while concerned that we do not become legalistic or pharisaic is not set in opposition to law otherwise there is a genuine concern that the dogma of the Faith really will be preserved in Portugal etc...

In charity, I'll presume he might really pray for those with whom he has a 'problem' rather than just sending in the volpi [least we forget]; so that's one out of two, maybe.

i predict, i hope wrongly, that by October most Catholics will be so hog-tied by this pope's MO and his kaspers, that they will no longer care about the results, but simply want to nod as simon says [fill in the blank].

  3. From your link:
“I would not understand a priest a priest who is getting a degree here, in Rome, but does not have a community life: This is wrong,” said Pope Francis. (...)

He said that academic “purism” is bad, and that if you see only the academic side of things, “there is a danger of slipping into ideology.”

So Pope Francis condemned Paul VI? He finally admits Vaticanum II is the result of an ideology?

As far as I know and according to wikipedia the Montini Pope never was a Parish priest not even for one day but entered the Secretariat of State in 1922,at the age of 25.

  4. I think that's correct (about pvi not being a parish priest), Martina.

but that's one of those hypocrises that are the privilege of pharisees. as, indeed are other privileges like making fun of baptism during Holy Mass. but 'that's entertainment' ahoooo!

  5. Today, all adherence to law is construed as being legalistic, heartless and unmerciful. It is a fatal caricature that is currently dividing the Church and creating much confusion.

In Matthew, for example, the error was not in following the law, but in neglecting the weightier things of the law:

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You pay tithes* of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and fidelity. [But] these you should have done, without neglecting the others."

Christ actually calls them NOT to neglect the law, so this idea that there is some kind of intrinsic disconnect between the law and love or mercy is absurd and unbiblical.

  6. I think I've missed something. Viterbo, who made fun of baptism during Holy Mass?

  7. I often wonder at the words of Jesus when He said:

“Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:17-20

My own poor understanding derived from this:

"But go you and learn what that means, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." Matthew 9:13

The Law will not change. All men sin. The Heart of the Law; however, is Mercy towards the sinner (not covering up the Law).

  9. @anonymous,

You said, "Mercy follows repentance, AND amendment of life, Liam."

I would suggest that you have clearly mastered the obvious, anonymous! Well done.

If you would re-read my posting, you will see I offered nothing whatsoever to the contrary.

  10. Anonymous makes a good point about the necessity to observe proper law.

I would only add that there are no greater hypocrites, than those "liberal catholics" or "thinking catholics", that is dissidents/heretics, at least formally, who pick and choose yet claim to be Catholic.

  11. @jacobi,

Not to pick nits, but I should say that 'anonymous' might more properly have said "...AND a firm purpose to amend one's life."

Dispensing Mercy presupposes there are rules, laws, doctrines, of which one has run afoul and for which misdeeds forgiveness must be sought from the One offended.

No one is likely to beg for Mercy if they don't recognize the law.

I see way too many gnat and splinter removers these days.

I get this awful feeling that there is a growing sentiment that runs this way:

"I've towed the line and have nothing to show for it (unless you count bitterness). Them what wont tow the line ought get a good kickin'...if I were God...".

The Law is the Law. We all fail but we must not abrogate or ignore the Law and when we sin we must repent and attempt to amend our lives over and over.

Did the Prodigal Son's elder brother ever join the party? Dunno.

  12. @chloe, the pope 'quipped' about 'baptising' martians at Mass. maybe i'm in the minority but jokes and ho-downs at calvary are wrong. he also said: "The 'Holy Spirit' makes the unthinkable possible." I guess he was demonstrating this by making jokes about martians and baptism at mass.

  13. "The Dogma of the Faith will always be preserved in Portugal, etc.", but even there, it is a remnant who preserve The Faith, due to those Baptized Catholics who condone abortion and/or same-sex marriage and thus have excommunicated themselves from Christ's One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Portugal, Ireland, Belgium. Italy, France, The United States, etc.
